CURRICULUM

ONLINE PORTION

In the classroom theory portion students are introduced to some of the controls of the motorcycle, and some of the theory behind their operation. Also discussed are some topics like how to choose the right motorcycle for you, safety equipment, as well as road, traffic and weather hazards. Perhaps the greatest emphasis is placed on the importance of rider attitude.

Our classroom section concludes with a mandatory quiz covering all topics discussed. The classroom is also the best place to have questions answered on a wide range of subjects as the on-bike portion of the course is devoted mainly to riding. Included are additional resources and homework to help you prepare for success in your course and of course as we say, ERS… Efforts, Results, Success!

ON-BIKE PORTION

While the Intro only course gives you a taste of what motorcycling is, the Full course is comprised of 4 modules. To begin, our first module of the course is focused on the absolute basics: getting on and off the bike, pushing the bike, parking it, starting up and shutting down the engine. Following this we cover moving off and stopping, slow-speed riding and shifting up and down.

Our second module is done using exercises which make up the foundation of operating a motorcycle. You will learn techniques needed to maneuver the bike at slow and intermediate speeds with an emphasis on smooth machine control.

Our third module deals directly with very important brake control skills including trail braking and optimum controlled braking followed by emergency avoidance push steering exercises so you will be able to practice correctly for the years of riding ahead. It also gives you a chance to try a different motorcycle.

If you are deemed ready by our instructors/successfully complete module 3, you will take part in our fourth module which provides you the opportunity to try a few more bikes before taking you on a controlled group ride on Calgary’s streets. The duration of the ride will be dependent on your groups’ skills levels. The goal of the ride is to cover all types of conditions beginning with slow, low-traffic residential routes and works up to major roads.

REQUIREMENTS

You MUST meet the following, no exceptions,

be at least sixteen (16) years of age (parental consent required if you are under 18 years of age).

FAQ

Q  Am I licenced at the end?
A  No. Testing a training are kept separate by Alberta Transportation. Our role is to train you and the government’s role is to test and licence you. You will be required to book a road test to be taken (currently) at a registry.

Q  Do I need to have my knowledge test completed to take the course?
A  No you do not. We actually recommend you wait until after your classroom session to do so as it will assist you in working towards acing the test! It is also not required for anything other than your road test.

Q  Do I need my own or can I use my own motorcycle to take a course?
A   The learn to Ride courses requires you to use the motorcycle provided.

Q  I’m only 5’1″ tall: do you have a bike I can ride?
A  Yes. We have Honda Groms and other low or lowered bikes that you will be matched with. Also, you are more than welcome to make an appointment to come to the lot and sit on a few to gauge how you feel..

Q  I’m 6’6″ and weigh 280 lbs: Do you have a bike that I can ride?
A  Saddle up!

Q  What do I need to bring?
A  The ability to be proficient at slow speed on a 2wheel pedal bike and a positive can-do attitude to start. You should not be tired, hung-over, or overly preoccupied with work / family or other troubles. We need you to be focused on the task at hand. Everyone’s safety depends on it.

Q  Do people ever crash during the course?
A  Yes. But because we insist on the use of safety gear at all times while riding, and because speeds in the closed-course environment are low, injuries are rare and relatively minor. Course activities are organized and conducted in a way that minimizes risk, and you will find that your coaches frequently stress key safety protocols. While the risk of injury cannot be completely eliminated from motorcycle training, following their advice and instructions will greatly reduce it. We feel it’s far better to have a minor fall in our parking lot at low speed, than in traffic on the road. Making mistakes is a part of learning and we provide the safest possible place to make them.

Q  I’m VERY nervous about taking the course and / or going on the road. Is that normal?
A  Absolutely! We’d rather you were a bit nervous than unconcerned or overconfident. It shows you understand the potential risk. Usually, however, once you see how gradually and carefully the course progresses, even the most apprehensive students become a lot more comfortable. Then, lo and behold, they even discover that it’s FUN! The prospect of going out on the road for the first time can cause a return of the jitters, and that’s to be expected as well. If either you or your coaches feel you aren’t ready, you WON’T go on the road. But if together we decide you’re ready, and you use what you’ve learned in your training, keep your head up and your eyes open, you’ll likely find the road isn’t as scary as you expected and probably a lot more fun.

Q  What should I look for in a helmet if choose to buy my own?
A  It must be at least DOT (and preferably Snell) approved full-faced helmets are the safest. It must fit SNUGLY. If it feels loose, try a smaller size. Buying used helmets is not recommended. We do go over helmet types and fit during your Online Classroom Theory.

Q  What gear do I need?
A  We require that you wear at least good sturdy pair of denim jeans, no fashion holes. As far as equipment goes, we provide gear – helmet, jacket, gloves up to 3XL, boots up to 13.5, back protector, and rain gear. Please contact the office if you are outside of those sizes or if you are unsure. You are welcome to bring your own, but we reserve the right to switch out or add to yours.

Q  My schedule is complicated and I can’t get the time off to do the whole course in one week. Can you accommodate my schedule?
A   Unfortunately no since our courses involve structured progressive learning. This means that all 4 modules are set just as the units within a course through college/university. Our classes also have limited spots so we are unable to reserve one spot in a few different courses for you. You are responsible for making arrangements within your personal schedule to make it work for you and ‘when there’s a will, there’s a way’.

Q  Can I rent your bike for the road test?
A  No we need our fleet for our courses but some registries do rent out a motorcycle or you can rent one from All Season Motorsports
